6 month follow up with my PCP

I see my PCP every 6 months.  There is always some reason that he wants to see me more than once a year.

It could be my weight, my cholesterol, etc.

Well this time my cholesterol is beyond normal for once.  We were both celebrating in the office as a big win.  That one was a long time coming.

My vitamin D though is very low.  So now I’m on a prescription and he wants to see me in 6 months again.  Then I reminded him that would be annual physical time so he added many more check marks to the blood work he wants me to have.

It was a good appointment.  I can tell he is not happy that my weight has basically stayed in the same in the last year.

In many ways, I’m not happy about it either.  What I AM happy about is it hasn’t been going up.

I told him that I to continue to work on the mental game of it and about the book I’m reading.  I love how he gets it and stays positive and knows it’s just not as easy as “move more, eat less”.

I move plenty.  I’m at the gym 5 – 6 times a week!

Except for my weight and vitamin D though everything is good and hopefully in 6 months it will be even better.

And the cravings continue…

Yesterday was my night off from exercise.

On Wednesdays I go to dance mania and then TRX.  I’m often really sore from TRX as I work my @$$$$$$ off so it’s a perfect night off.

For some reason, when I have a night off, all I want to do it eat.

When I was picking up my son for his swim class, I couldn’t get donuts out of my head.  So I decided, instead of obsessing about the donut, denying myself and then binging later, I would just buy a donut.

I went into honeydew donuts, bought one for me and one for my son (his favorite so how could I not get him one?).

I have to admit though, I did my best to enjoy every bite, but it just wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be.

What is important though is I decided to eat something, I ate it in moderation, and I tracked it.

Later that night I was feeling just munchy.  I again decided not to fight.  I just don’t think I had it in me to fight myself last night.

Again, the good news was I tracked it and I kept the portions low.  One portion of popcorn and one portion of cheez-its.

I ended up over by about 400 calories yesterday so I consider that a victory.

I consider last night a victory.  I’m a little bloated this morning from all the salt, but I feel good that I didn’t binge.  I totally snacked, but it was far from a binge.

Instead of fighting with myself for hours and then giving in, I just made a choice.

I don’t feel guilty today.  I don’t feel upset.

I am feeling cautious though.  Even though last night was ok with me, I’m afraid it will become a habit and that is not a good thing.

I can be ok with nights like last night as long as it doesn’t become a nightly thing.

My amazing (but simple) dinner last night

When I was leaving work yesterday, I was craving pasta.

In the past, that would mean making a box of pasta with lots of butter and Parmesan cheese and stuffing myself.

Last night, I was determined to have my pasta, but keep it healthy and tasty.

I went out and bought linguine, shrimp, and spinach.

I weighed one serving of the linguine and cooked it.

While that was cooking, I sauteed the shrimp in a little olive oil, lots of minced garlic, my favorite herb mix, and pepper.  I then removed that from the pan and sauteed the spinach in some olive oil, salt and pepper.

When everything was done cooking, I put all three in the pan and tossed them together and then sprinkled Parmesan cheese on top.

It tasted AMAZING!  I wish I took a picture!

I have some leftover shrimp and spinach so I think I know what I’m having tonight…

Blood test result victory

Cholesterol issues run in my family.

My parents are both at healthy weights and have had cholesterol issues for years.   Sounds like one of my grandparents also had an issue.  The others could have as well, but one died young and the others weren’t good about going to doctors.

The weird thing about my cholesterol issues, is often when I gain weight, it goes down and when I lose weight it goes up (See posts: “Why is it everytime I lose a signifigant amount of weight, my cholesterol goes up?” and “Yearly Physical (!@@##@$@# Cholesterol!)“).

When we checked my cholesterol at my yearly physical in August, my total cholesterol was 261, and it’s now 193!!!

My triglycerides went from 226 to 128!  LDL from 167 to 120!  Ratio from 5.3 to 4.1!  None of these were my highest numbers either.

Even my HDL has risen a bit which is a good thing.

My six month follow up appointment (which did get delayed a little) is Friday and I’m excited to go for once because maybe we’ll be able to lower my statins a bit finally.

It just feels great to see progress.  I actually want to cry I’m so happy right now.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go off medication completely due to genetic issues, but to finally see something working is just beyond.
